Something exciting is happening next month. Emma and I have had a novel idea for the avenue and we’re putting it into action.
If you live on the Ave, you may have come by this in your mailbox:
Our goal is to have a fun evening where a paper lantern is lit out the front of every house and business on Wray Avenue. As Fremantle’s only avenue, I believe Wray could look beautiful with decorated paper lanterns lining the sides of the street.
We’ve decided to coincide the official lighting of lanterns with Earth Hour as it represents a great opportunity for people to take time to get out of their houses, mingle with neighbours, enjoy a stroll along our street and enjoy the sight of some beautiful lanterns away from any electrical devices.
That’s on the 31st of March, and I’m suggesting we spread ourselves out on the footpath and verge, fire up some barbecues, play some games and have a good time in our neighbourhood. I’d be great to finish this with a lighting of the lanterns and a walk along Wray Ave to check out everyone’s decorated lights.
That’s just my idea for it though; I’d love to know what you think, as I’d love it to be our event, driven by everyone on the street. So other suggestions are welcome and we can have a more definite schedule closer to the event. Please post as a comment below.
Prior to Earth Hour, we are having a lantern making workshop this coming Sunday (the 26th) from 2 until 5 at my house, number 40 Wray Avenue. Please let me know if you’d like to come along. It’d be great to meet you and have you lend a pair of hands to making lanterns – even if it’s only for an hour. Kids are welcome too, but please RSVP so we can cater appropriately.
Hopefully we can use this time to make the bulk of the 100+ lanterns that will be needed to line the street.
The project is kindly supported and funded by the City of Fremantle as part of their plan for Earth Hour.
We look forward to seeing and hearing from you, if not this Sunday then on March 31st.
We’ll post more info closer to the date.
